1. Rayleigh waves and Love waves both are surface waves.
      The major difference include:
      1. In their motion pattern, the particles in the wavefront of the Rayleigh wave are polarized to vibrate in the vertical plane. Whereas Love waves give a surface wave with horizontal particle motions.
      2. Such motion makes Love waves more dangerous with respect to destruction caused during EQ event.
      3. Velocity of Rayleigh waves is less than S-wave velocity. VR (rayleigh wave) = 0.92 ? (? = s-wave velocity).
The velocity (?1) of S-waves in the near-surface layer must be lower than in the underlying half-space (?2). The velocity of the Love waves (VL) lies between the two extreme values: ?1 < VL < ?2.
      Hope this helps
